About the EasyLI Done!™ Series Tutorials

All EasyLI Done!™ Series Tutorials are designed to accomplish specific tasks on a step-by-step basis!
From connecting two computers together to share files using a crossover cable to setting up a secured wireless network connection, these online tutorials are extremely easy to follow. Although all tutorials were put together with the novice user (beginner) in mind, advanced users will find a few tricks to put to use also, such as 'How to Force Windows to Shutdown' when it just won't shutdown normally.

Did you know? Windows reserves 12% of hard disk space for the System Restore feature.

If you have a large hard drive, a considerable amount of hard disk space will be reserved for System Restore. For instance, on a 250 GB hard drive, 30 GB of disk space is reserved. That's enough space to store about 42 music CDs! But remember, do not reduce the reserved disk space to zero, because Windows needs some space for System Restore to be able to restore your computer to an earlier date, if needed.

Follow the steps below to reduce the amount of space reserved by System Restore.

Step-by-step Tutorials: Text Versions

Connect your computers together to backup or share your files between them, using a crossover cable.
If you have a router, connect all your computers to the router and share internet connections, as well as file sharing!
It's easy, it's fast, and best of all, it's now free!

How to Reduce the Amount of Space Reserved by System Restore

By default, Windows reserves 12% of disk space for System Restore. On a 40 GB hard drive, that's a whopping 4,800 MB! On a 60 GB hard drive, that's 7,200 MB! Although the more space you reserve, the more Restore Points you can create, 1,024 MB (1 GB = 1,024 MB) is sufficient space for System Restore to create several Restore Points.

Here's how to reduce the amount of space reserved by System Restore:

Step 1: With the left mouse button, click on the 'Start' button.

Step 2: With the right mouse button, click on 'My Computer'.

Step 3: With the left mouse button, click on 'Properties'.

Step 4: With the left mouse button, click on the 'System Restore' tab (top left tab).

Step 5: With the left mouse button, click on the Drive you want to reclaim space on.

Step 6: With the left mouse button, click on 'Settings...'.

Step 7: With the left mouse button, click on the Slider (slider) and continue holding down the left mouse button.

Step 8: Drag the slider to the left, to decrease the amount of space reserved by System Restore.

My drive holds 250 GB, and setting the slider to the minimum, which is 200 MB is not feasible. So in my case, 1% (3,041 MB) is the minimum acceptable value I can choose. I would rather be able to choose 1,024 MB, but that choice is not available on drives this large.

Step 9: With the left mouse button, click on the 'OK' button.

Step 10: With the left mouse button, click on the 'OK' button.

You have now reclaimed some of the space previously reserved by System Restore!
