Windows® XP computers.
You can only disable or hide the Windows® Messenger icon in
Windows® XP.

on or restart your computer.

How to Prevent
Windows® Messenger from Starting Automatically and Appearing
in Your System Tray
Whether you use it or not, by default, Windows® Messenger
appears in your System Tray every time Windows® is started.
Here's how to prevent Windows® Messenger from starting
automatically and appearing in your System Tray:

Step 1: With the left mouse button, double-click
on the 'Windows Messenger' icon in the System Tray
area.

Step 2: With the left mouse button, click on 'Tools'.
|
|
Step 3: With the left mouse button, click on 'Options'.
|
|
Step 4: With the left mouse button, click on the 'Preferences'
tab.
|
|
Step 5: With the left mouse button, click on the box next
to 'Run this program when Windows starts' (The green checkmark
will disappear from the box, indicating this option has been deselected).

|
Step 6: With the left mouse button, click on the 'OK'
button to save your settings and close the 'Options' dialog
box.
|
|
Step 7: With the left mouse button, click on the
'Close' button to close the 'Windows Messenger' program.
|
|
Step 8: With the left mouse button, click on the 'Start'
button.
|
|
Step 9: With the left mouse button, click on the 'Turn
Off Computer' button.

|
Step 10: With the left mouse button, click on the 'Restart'
button.
|
Windows® Messenger will no longer start
automatically and the Windows® Messenger icon will no longer appear
in your System Tray area.
